Arsenal midfielder, Kai Havertz, is on the mend after successfully undergoing a minor knee operation, the Premier League club confirmed on Thursday. The German international is expected to return to action in a matter of weeks, rather than months, as he begins his recovery process.
Havertz, 26, was absent from Arsenal’s 5-0 victory against Leeds United at the Emirates on Saturday after sustaining the knee injury during the opening weekend of the season in their 2-0 win over Manchester United on August 17.
In a statement released by the club, Arsenal assured fans that the operation was a success. “Today, Kai underwent a successful minor surgical procedure,” the statement read. “He will shortly begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with everyone fully focused on supporting Kai to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
The club’s medical team, along with specialists, decided that surgery was necessary after conducting follow-up assessments. Despite the setback, Arsenal remains optimistic about a swift return for the versatile midfielder.
Havertz’s injury came just as Arsenal secured a major transfer, blocking Eberechi Eze’s move to North London rivals Tottenham. The Gunners made headlines by signing the England international from Crystal Palace for an initial £60 million ($81 million). Eze was introduced to the Emirates crowd ahead of the Leeds game, and he is expected to make his debut against Premier League champions Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, as Arsenal continues its push to end a 22-year wait for the English top-flight title.
However, the Gunners will face Liverpool without Havertz, as well as key players Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard, both of whom are sidelined due to hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively, sustained during the Leeds match. Christian Nørgaard and Ben White are also doubtful, while Gabriel Jesus remains a long-term absentee with a knee injury.
