A joint security operation has led to the rescue of Joshua Saleh, a lecturer at Taraba State University who was kidnapped along the Chinkai–Kente–Wukari Road in Wukari Local Government Area.
He was freed unhurt after troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade and operatives of the Department of State Services stormed several hideouts where he was believed to be held.
According to a statement released on Sunday by Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the operation was carried out across four communities—Kente, Sondi, Yaku and Warawa.
“It was a coordinated rescue mission. The kidnappers engaged our men in a firefight but were overpowered and forced to flee. The victim was recovered safely,” the Army spokesperson said.
Saleh was abducted on July 31. His case sparked concern among the academic community and raised questions about growing insecurity along key roads in Taraba.
The rescue team reportedly relied on what the military described as “credible and actionable intelligence”. The breakthrough came after days of surveillance and joint tracking efforts between the Army and DSS.
Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, praised the troops for their speed and courage. He called on residents to stay alert and share timely information with security agencies.
“This success shows what is possible when communities and security forces work together. We urge the public not to shield criminal elements,” he said.
So far, no arrests have been confirmed, but military sources say the operation is ongoing and the fleeing suspects are being tracked.
Observers Times learnt that the lecturer has been reunited with his family and is undergoing medical checks.
