Suspected armed herders on Saturday launched a deadly attack on Tse Akor Gbatse village in Nyiev Council Ward, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, killing a farmer and injuring several others, including members of his family. Several residents are also feared missing.
The assault, which occurred just a few kilometres from Daudu town, came days after locals had raised alarm over a possible invasion.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers were believed to have camped at Rukubi in Doma LGA, Nasarawa State, before striking border settlements in Guma. He added that the assault followed claims by the herders that three of their children had gone missing weeks earlier.
“The armed men killed Tachia Akor, his wife, and Mrs Tsetim, while others sustained serious injuries. Some victims are receiving treatment at Adi Hospital in Daudu, and many farmers remain unaccounted for,” the source said.
Reports indicate the attackers are still roaming several deserted communities in Guma, prompting calls for urgent security intervention.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Udeme Edet said officers had been deployed and investigations were underway. “Normalcy has also returned to the area,” he added.
