A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, of masterminding what he described as a “fabricated coup allegation” aimed at tarnishing the image of opposition figures and diverting public attention from his administration’s failures.
The APC chieftain, whose remarks have stirred political tension across the state, claimed that the purported coup narrative was part of a calculated smear campaign to frame opposition leaders as threats to democracy ahead of the next election cycle.
According to him, the Diri administration has grown increasingly uneasy about the rising influence of the APC in Bayelsa and is allegedly resorting to propaganda tactics to undermine political rivals. He argued that the coup story was “a desperate ploy to gain sympathy and paint the opposition as enemies of the state.”
He called on federal authorities and security agencies to investigate the origin of the coup allegation and hold those responsible for spreading false information accountable.
Governor Diri’s office has yet to issue an official response to the claims, but sources close to the state government have dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.
Observers say the escalating war of words between the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC signals an intensifying political showdown in Bayelsa, with both sides trading accusations as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
