A political analyst has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan to maintain his role as an elder statesman rather than return to partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The comment follows growing calls from opposition leaders urging the former president to join the 2027 presidential race in what they describe as a move to unseat the current administration.
Speaking on the development, political commentator Omotayo Yusuf described the idea of Jonathan re-entering the race as “fascinating but unnecessary.”
According to him, Jonathan’s political journey already places him as a significant national figure whose contributions would be more valuable outside active contestation.
“Jonathan’s plan to be in the game in the 2027 election is interesting, considering he lost in 2015 and did not contest in 2019 or 2023. It would be fascinating if he decides to join, but I do not think he should run as a major player,” Yusuf stated.
He further explained that while Jonathan remains influential in Nigeria’s political atmosphere, his participation as a candidate might undermine the legacy he has built since leaving office.
“At this stage, I think it is better for him to act as an elder statesman and guide the younger generation rather than seek elective office again,” he added.
The discussion gained momentum after reports surfaced that the former president recently met with the national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, fuelling speculation about his possible political comeback.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reportedly zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, a move interpreted by analysts as a strategic opening for Jonathan’s potential candidacy.
However, Yusuf maintained that the former leader’s involvement in active politics could blur his current global reputation as a peace ambassador and respected mediator across Africa.
