Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly denied making any derogatory statement about former United States President Donald Trump, dismissing the circulating claims as false and malicious.
A statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon Eseme Eyiboh, described the viral post suggesting that Akpabio insulted Trump over an alleged threat to “invade Nigeria” as “entirely fabricated and mischievous.”
Eyiboh clarified that at no time did the Senate President issue such a statement either publicly or privately. “Our attention has been drawn to a malicious and completely fabricated post falsely attributing a reckless and imaginary statement to the President of the Senate,” he said.
The fake quote, which has been widely circulated on social media, claimed Akpabio said: “The killing is taking place in Nigeria not in the USA. Trump should focus on the US. Nigerians are not complaining about the killings.”
According to Eyiboh, the quote was deliberately concocted to mislead the public and cause diplomatic friction between Nigeria and the United States. “The Senate President has never had any conversation, statement, or release that corresponds with the false publication,” he stated.
He further revealed that Akpabio’s media team had contacted the platform responsible for spreading the report, urging it to disclose the source of the misinformation.
Eyiboh added that the viral post also misused a photograph of Akpabio at an unrelated event to give false credibility to the fabricated message.
He emphasised that the Senate President holds the former U.S. leader in high regard, describing him as “a historic figure and a leader of a great nation.”
“Senator Akpabio respects the principles of diplomacy and international cooperation. He would never issue any comment capable of straining Nigeria’s relationship with the United States or any other friendly country,” the statement further read.
The Senate President’s office urged members of the public to disregard the report entirely, stressing its commitment to transparency, responsible communication, and peaceful global engagement.
Eyiboh concluded by assuring Nigerians that “the Office of the Senate President remains focused on strengthening bilateral relations and promoting mutual respect between nations.”
