Ademola Lookman’s potential move from Atalanta to Napoli has stalled, as negotiations between both Serie A clubs reportedly broke down in June. The Super Eagles star is now focusing on a transfer to Inter Milan, according to multiple Italian reports.
Despite earlier interest from Napoli and Atletico Madrid, Lookman has made it clear that his sole desire is to join Inter this summer. A report by Football Italia quoted sources close to the player saying: “Lookman has not been considering any other options. The player himself has decided that he only wants to join Inter this window.”
The 27-year-old forward, who plays predominantly as an inverted left-winger, has emerged as a top transfer target for Inter’s head coach, Simone Inzaghi. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Lookman has already agreed personal terms with the Nerazzurri, including a €4.5 million-per-year contract that could rise to €5 million by 2030.
While Napoli reportedly offered more—around €5 million annually—the deal failed to gain traction due to Atalanta’s reluctance. “Atalanta made it clear from the beginning that they didn’t want to proceed with the transfer,” Football Italia stated.
New Napoli manager Antonio Conte, despite being an admirer of Lookman’s qualities, has shifted his attention to traditional wingers. The club recently completed the signings of Dutch winger Noa Lang and forward Lorenzo Lucca, and are reportedly targeting one more wide player to strengthen their frontline.
Meanwhile, Inter remain in active discussions with Atalanta, who are holding out for a €50 million fee. Italian transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà said performance-related bonuses could play a key role in finalising the deal.
The transfer saga also involves a financial twist for Lookman’s former club, RB Leipzig. The German side, which sold the Nigerian to Atalanta in 2022 for €10.85 million, inserted a sell-on clause in the deal. As per La Gazzetta dello Sport, Leipzig stand to earn 10 per cent of any capital gain up to €20 million and 15 per cent for sums above that threshold.
If Lookman secures the move, it would mark a significant step in his Serie A journey. The forward was instrumental for Atalanta last season, finishing as their top scorer and helping the Bergamo-based side qualify for European competition.
His decisive performances, including a historic hat-trick in the Europa League final, have made him one of the most sought-after attackers in Italy this transfer window.
