The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of shielding the State Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, who is wanted by police over the killing of residents in Akinlalu community.
The opposition party has challenged Adeleke to cooperate fully with police investigation and surrender Omoyele to authorities.
The allegations, contained in a statement signed by the Osun APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, and obtained in Osogbo on Sunday, were dismissed by the governor, who insisted that the state government would not interfere in the ongoing investigation into the Akinlalu killings.
The Osun Amotekun Corps has been in the news for negative reasons since Tuesday, 30th September 2025, when its operatives invaded Akinlalu community, shot at residents, and allegedly killed three people.
The incident, which drew widespread condemnation over the Corps’ mode of operation, also prompted calls for the arrest and prosecution of the operatives responsible for the act.
A report released by the Osun State Police Command after the incident listed those killed as Ibrahim Oyebamiji (male), 26; Sefiu Oyebamiji (male); and Abiola Olutayo (male).
Those injured included Adeagbo Kadijat (female), 22; Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (female), 60; and Fayomi Toheeb (male), 19.
The police further confirmed that Amotekun operatives took away the corpses of the deceased after the incident.
Although the leadership of the Amotekun Corps in the state admitted that three people were killed, it claimed the victims had engaged its operatives in a gunfight. The Corps alleged that its men were ambushed by hoodlums who had earlier gone to Akinlalu to recover two rifles forcibly taken from its operatives.
A team deployed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, which has since taken over the investigation, arrested five operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps.
However, the police said Omoyele had yet to honour its invitation to explain his role in the Akinlalu killings.
The APC noted Adeleke’s earlier commendation of the police for their “diligent and professional handling” of the case, but accused him of hypocrisy.
“However, to prove that he was not merely paying lip service to the call for prosecution of the blood-sucking vampires responsible for the carnage of innocent souls at Akinlalu, Governor Adeleke should prioritise the exposure of the Commander of Osun Amotekun, Mr Isaac Adekunle Omoyele,” the party stated.
“If the news circulating in Osogbo, the state capital, is anything to go by — that Omoyele, one of the crucial suspects in the dastardly act in Akinlalu, has been hibernating in the Government House, Osogbo, to evade police arrest — it is condemnable, irresponsible, wicked, and unpatriotic.”
The party further expressed concern that Adeleke was allegedly aiding and abetting criminality, stating: “It is now the case with his former Chief Security Officer, Omoyele, who is said to have gone into hiding immediately after his balloon of lies about a staged assassination attempt was deflated by the police.”
The opposition further urged the governor to demonstrate his professed commitment to the rule of law.
“As a self-acclaimed patriot and believer in the rule of law, Governor Adeleke should, without further delay, hand over the state commander of Amotekun to the police for them to conduct a thorough investigation into the Akinlalu killings, which have become a national embarrassment,” the APC added.
Reacting to the allegations, Adeleke, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, dismissed the claims as “another example of a losing party struggling for relevance.”
He reaffirmed his trust in the ongoing police investigation and cautioned against politicising the tragic incident.
“The Akinlalu matter is a question of law and order, and the Inspector-General of Police has acted on the matter. The police are conducting an active investigation. Our government will not intervene or interfere,” the governor stated.
“I caution our people to avoid the temptation to politicise the unfortunate incident. We should allow due process to take its course without let or hindrance.”
“The opposition’s allegations are unfounded and baseless. The Osun APC, in want of direction and strategy, has grown to be a constant purveyor of fake news,” the statement partly read.
“We will not succumb to blackmail or surrender to a party that is more interested in destabilising the state than delivering good governance.”
