The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has fiercely criticised the Federal Government’s plan to spend a staggering ₦712 billion on renovating Murtala Muhammed International Airport, branding it a “misplaced priority” and calling for an immediate halt to the project.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the opposition party demanded a full independent audit, questioning whether the National Assembly approved the massive expenditure.
“Nigerians deserve clarity. Where is this money coming from, and under what constitutional authority?” the ADC asked.
The party noted that the same airport received a major upgrade in 2022, with a brand-new terminal featuring 66 check-in counters, jet bridges, and capacity for 14 million passengers—yet handled just 6.5 million in 2024.
The ADC argued the ₦712 billion (around $500m) could instead be used to build seven teaching hospitals, provide free education, power rural communities, or fix crumbling roads.
“Nigeria’s aviation sector needs maintenance and regional growth, not billion-naira vanity projects,” the party said.
The ADC urged the government to rethink its priorities and demanded transparency in national spending.
