Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has criticized the state judiciary for releasing suspected bandit leaders, who were facing trial for their crimes. The governor alleged that the release was orchestrated by influential figures in Abuja, who had been in contact with the suspects and assured them of their freedom.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of new magistrates in Gusau, Governor Lawal commended some judiciary members for their dedication and integrity but urged the new officers to uphold their duties with honesty and fairness. He emphasized the importance of their roles in ensuring justice for the citizens of Zamfara, who are facing a security crisis due to rampant banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling.
The governor revealed that one of the suspected bandit leaders was arrested in Bauchi State, while another was captured in Gusau, but both were released following alleged intervention from Abuja. He has been vocal about the escalating insecurity in Zamfara, attributing it to unauthorized negotiations between prominent individuals in Abuja and the bandits, which he claims are exacerbating the security situation in the state.
Chief Judge of Zamfara State, Justice Kulu Aliyu, also admonished the newly appointed magistrates to uphold honesty and dedication, reminding them of their responsibility to enhance the judiciary’s image and reputation.
This development highlights the challenges facing Zamfara State in its efforts to combat banditry and restore law and order, and the need for a collaborative and transparent approach to addressing the security crisis.
