The Senate of Nigeria has responded strongly to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent allegations that lawmakers at the National Assembly determine their own salaries and receive special financial packages from the executive branch. In a statement released by Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate characterized Obasanjo’s remarks as an “attempt to crucify the legislature by centurions of political hypocrisy.”

Obasanjo made these claims during a visit from members of the House of Representatives in Abeokuta, Ogun State, which has since generated significant public concern and debate. In his defense, Adaramodu emphasized that no senator has received any financial patronage from the presidency and clarified that the salaries of lawmakers are determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission, in accordance with constitutional guidelines.

He further explained that while constituency projects are often associated with the legislature, they are actually suggested and nominated by senators, with the execution of these projects falling under the purview of the executive branch and its various agencies. The funds for these projects are allocated based on the number of constituencies in each state, aiming to ensure equitable distribution of federal resources across Nigeria.

As the political climate heats up, Adaramodu reassured the public of the Senate’s commitment to responsible governance and economic growth, asserting that the 10th Assembly operates within the confines of constitutional provisions and does not seek additional benefits from other government branches. He challenged anyone with credible evidence to dispute the Senate’s claims, labeling accusations that lawmakers set their own salaries as “uncharitable and satanic.”
