Yahaya Bello Faces Backlash for Selling Off Igala Lands and Properties: Igala Community Demands Immediate Halt

In a stunning turn of events, Yahaya Bello, the Governor of Kogi State, has come under fire for his continuous actions of selling off valuable Igala lands and crucial properties, including the agriculture research and development center, governor’s lodges, and various other assets. This audacious move has not only sparked outrage among the Igala people but has also drawn international condemnation. The recent move was the proposed sale of government properties in Igala land. These properties dated as far back as the time when most part of Igala land were native authorities during the colonial era.

Leading the charge against these actions, Mr. Suleiman Michael, the President of Igala United Front, alongside Mr. Onalo Haruna, the President of Igala People in Diaspora, Australia chapter, and the President of Igala People Worldwide, have united their voices to vehemently denounce the persistent affront on the Igala people and their kingdom. In an open statement, they called upon Governor Yahaya Bello to immediately cease the sale of Igala land and properties, emphasizing the importance of preserving their heritage and protecting the rights of the Igala community.

The Igala people, who form a significant ethnic group in Nigeria, have a rich cultural heritage and a strong bond with their ancestral lands. The sale of these lands, which serve as vital resources for the community, has ignited widespread anger and dismay. The agriculture research and development center, for instance, plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable farming practices and supporting local agriculture. Its loss not only hampers the progress of the Igala people but also undermines the region’s agricultural potential.

Furthermore, the governor’s lodges hold historical and symbolic significance, serving as important symbols of governance and identity for the Igala community. Selling off these properties disregards the historical and cultural value they represent, leaving the Igala people feeling marginalized and disrespected.

Mr. Michael, Mr. Haruna, and the collective Igala community worldwide strongly urge Governor Bello to reconsider his actions and prioritize the interests of the Igala people over short-term gains. They emphasize the need for dialogue and constructive engagement to find alternative solutions that promote development while safeguarding the rights and heritage of the Igala people.

The voices of the Igala community are growing louder, with support pouring in from various quarters both within Nigeria and internationally. Concerned citizens, human rights activists, and organizations dedicated to the preservation of indigenous cultures are joining forces to rally behind the cause and amplify the demand for immediate action.

As the controversy continues to unfold, the spotlight remains fixed on Governor Yahaya Bello, who faces mounting pressure to rectify this affront against the Igala people. The coming days will prove crucial in determining whether he will heed the calls for a cessation of land sales and engage in meaningful dialogue to restore trust and protect the interests of one of Nigeria’s vibrant cultural communities.
