As the world marks World Humanitarian Day, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sounds the alarm on the escalating attacks against aid workers in conflict zones. ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric strongly condemns the violence, emphasizing that it is unacceptable for civilians and humanitarian workers to face danger while trying to help those in need.

The ICRC reports a disturbing trend, with six staff members killed and 14 others injured in 2023-24 alone. President Spoljaric expresses solidarity with civilians caught in conflict and praises the dedication of Red Cross Red Crescent Movement staff and volunteers.

The ICRC urges enhanced protection for humanitarian workers and civilians in conflict zones, highlighting the devastating consequences of attacks on aid workers for those relying on their assistance.

In North East Nigeria, the ICRC is providing vital support to thousands affected by the Boko Haram conflict, including food, shelter, and medical care. Through its humanitarian efforts, the ICRC aims to alleviate suffering and support victims in rebuilding their lives, demonstrating its commitment to protecting and assisting civilians affected by armed conflict worldwide.

The ICRC’s work in North East Nigeria is a testament to the organization’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian principles. Despite the challenges and risks, the ICRC remains dedicated to providing essential services to those affected by conflict, promoting respect for international humanitarian law, and supporting communities in rebuilding their lives.

As the world marks World Humanitarian Day, the ICRC calls on all parties to conflict to respect the safety and security of humanitarian workers, and to ensure that civilians receive the assistance they need to survive and thrive. By working together, we can create a more humane world where aid workers can operate safely and effectively.
