Girls of Olugbobiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State Thursday took to the streets of the town as they protested what they termed “sex for 5k”.
Olugbobiri community, home town of David Lyon, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the last governorship election in Bayelsa State, is known to have a sizeable number of ex-militants, also know as Generals.
The grouse of the young ladies, Nigerdeltaconnect gathered, was that the Generals (ex-militants) and the supposed leaders of the community, who should support and assist them through empowerment, are only interested in sleeping with them and giving them a paltry five thousand Naira.after the act.
In a telephone chat, a boat driver resident in Olugbobiri community, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the protest, adding that “the young girls are saying they do not want to be seen as objects of sex, they do not want to be considered as commercial sex workers. They would rather wish to be assisted, to be empowered so that they can live responsible lives of their own”.
According to the ladies, the generals in the community are financially comfortable and can empower them so, why would they be interested in sleeping with them and not assist them.
The women, according to sources, wanted to know if they (the women) were the sisters of the generals, if they would be happy seeing other men sleep with them.
The angry ladies said they were tired of being used as commercial sex workers instead of being given the opportunity to llead better, responsible lives.
