Veteran Singer and Actress Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72

Legendary Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, and former judge Onyeka Onwenu has sadly passed away at the age of 72. According to reports, she slumped after performing at a birthday ceremony for Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, at Banana Island, Lagos, on Tuesday night. She was later confirmed dead at Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Onwenu was a trailblazer in the Nigerian music industry, starting her career in the 1980s and releasing her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981. She went on to release numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.” She was also an accomplished actress, appearing in several Nollywood films.

Apart from her achievements in the entertainment industry, Onwenu was also a dedicated public servant. She served as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian society were recognized with several awards, including the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. She was also named one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations.

Her legacy in music, film, and public service will be deeply missed, but her impact will continue to inspire future generations. May her soul rest in peace.
