Trump: ‘Jerusalem to remain Israel’s undivided capital’

In another major twist, Trump said minutes after that that East Jerusalem will be the capital of the Palestinian state, and a US embassy will be opened there, adding that the peace plan would bolster the Palestinian economy — and see the Palestinian territory more than doubled.

The remarks came as the US leader, accompanied by Israel’s caretaker Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, unveiled his Middle East peace plan in full.

The event opened a new chapter in the history of the accord that Trump dubbed Deal of the Century, in the making ever since 2017.

In the run-up to the big reveal, tensions were running high — while both Netanyahu and his arch-rival, Blue and White chief Benny Gantz, sounded optimistic about it, concerns were also voiced on both sides of the conflict.

The leaders of the Jewish settlers residing in the West Bank said they were concerned by the prospect of a Palestinian state — and so were some of the politicians on Israel’s right.

In Gaza, thousands marched on Tuesday ahead of the reveal, burning US flags and trampling on Trump’s pictures as Hamas and its rival Palestinian Authority announced a rare joint meeting against the deal.
