President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is poised to implement a significant cabinet reshuffle, sources close to the presidency have revealed. The move comes as some appointees are reportedly “struggling in their portfolios and unprepared for the job.”
Tinubu had issued a stern warning to his cabinet members and top appointees during a November retreat, stating, “You will sign a bond with me. If you are performing, nothing to fear. If you miss the objective, if you don’t perform, you leave us.”
The president has also directed his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, to reactivate the “Presidential Delivery Tracker” to monitor and report on the performance of his cabinet members.
The impending reshuffle may be linked to the current corruption scandal involving two ministers: Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (Interior) and Dr. Betta Edu (Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation). While Edu has been suspended, Tunji-Ojo has been linked to a firm that received a controversial contract.
Sources indicate that up to five ministers may be dropped, and new ministries created. However, it is understood that the Ministers of FCT, Nyesom Wike, and Works, David Umahi, are unlikely to be affected.
The cabinet reshuffle and creation of new ministries are expected to be announced soon, as Tinubu seeks to reinvigorate his administration and address underperformance.
