Cipriano Cassama has resigned as the president of Guinea-Bissau after one whole day in office revealing that his life was in danger.
He was one of the two men who had been declared President, he was appointed by parliament, the majority of whose deputies refused to acknowledge the election victory of the former opposition leader, Umaro Sissoco Embalol.
He said: “I have no security, my life is in danger, the life of my family is in danger, the life of this people is in danger. I cannot accept that, that is why I took this decision”

“They threatened to kill the security officers in my service if they do not resign, and threatened to kill me if I do not resign from the office to which I was legally appointed,”
According to Bloomberg, Outgoing President Jose Mario Vaz had handed over power to Embalo at a hotel in Bissau last week. The PAIGC claims that Embalo’s victory was marred by fraud and its losing candidate, Domingos Simoes Pereira, is demanding a recount.
Guinea-Bissau has had nine coups or attempted coups since 1980.
