General Abdulsalami Abubakar, a former Head of State, is urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action against Nigeria’s economic hardship, which has left many struggling to afford basic necessities.
Abdulsalami emphasized that providing palliatives without addressing the root causes of the hardship is merely a temporary solution. He suggested that the government should focus on flooding the market with food and selling it at reduced prices to make it more accessible to the people.
“The hardship in the land is getting out of control. Everybody is crying about this hardship. It seems to be getting out of control. People cannot afford three square meals,” Abdulsalami said.
He made these comments while hosting the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR), led by Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi, to commemorate his birthday.
Abdulsalami proposed that the government buy food and sell it at reduced prices to alleviate the hardship. He also encouraged peaceful protests and called on the government to listen to demonstrators.
“We have passed recommendations to the government on how to address the economic hardship. We hope they will implement them,” Abdulsalami said.
The CDHR leader, Abdullahi Jabi, echoed these concerns, urging the government to find urgent solutions to the prevailing hunger and economic hardship.
“If at all we are going to demonstrate, let us know this is why we are demonstrating. Let us not inflict hardship on fellow Nigerians. I also call on the government to listen to the demonstrators because you cannot beat a child and prevent it from crying,” Abdulsalami added.
