After dealing with a lot of political drama and disagreements within their ranks, the leading opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is preparing for a highly important National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on April 18, 2024.
The NEC meeting will address the concerns hindering the party’s advancement, including determining the suitable consequences for individuals participating in anti-party actions. This includes the FCT Minister, who openly admitted to not supporting Atiku Abubakar.
According to Segun Showunmi, the upcoming NEC meeting has been characterized as a crucial turning point, highlighting its vital significance for the party’s prospects moving forward. Showunmi underscored that the outcomes of the meeting will not just affect the upcoming election but will also shape the party’s ability to endure over the long term.
He said, “This NEC is a make or mar meeting for the PDP because a lot of issues require the attention of the party members, and the members of the party and the Nigerian public have some minimum expectations as to how they expect the party to progress going forward. Whatever the NEC comes out with will have a far-reaching implication on the party, not only on the next election but also on the future and survival of the party.”
“I believe that deep thinking and sober reflection should help them to know what is expedient; once they come out of the NEC, people will be holding their breath to see the outcome of the meeting, and I hope that they take it with the seriousness that it deserves,”
The PDP governors reached a consensus that a comprehensive restructuring of the party is necessary. They emphasized that proceeding with the NEC meeting without first resolving the issues concerning Wike and the status of Damagum would not be favorable.
