Staff Maltreatment: Sacked Fidelity Bank workers who received peanuts after years of service protest in Abuja

by

Some staff members of Fidelity Bank Plc, who were sacked last month after spending several years in the financial institution on Friday protested over there unceremonious dismissal.

The disengaged staff members, who stormed the Fidelity Bank’s regional headquarters in the Central Business District of Abuja, also lamented the paltry amount of money they received as payoff package
They carried placards with various inscriptions such as “We say no to marginalisation, oppression; Fidelity Bank MD pay us our benefits after 20 years of service,” among others.

One of the affected staff, who pleaded anonymity, told PlatinumPost that he spent 20 years working in the bank but was only paid N210, 000 after the dismissal
He said the money which was equivalent to three months salary, was paid across board to affected staff in his category, adding that it was far below expectation

Junior staff including drivers normally receive N100,000 per annum as termination benefit. If a driver spends 10 years, he will get N1 million, but I spent 20 years and was only paid N210, 000,” he lamented.

While calling for justice and appealing to the bank’s management to ensure they get what is financially due to them, the staff, who said he worked in one of the branches in a northern state, queried the manner they were fired from the job.

” They just told us we were having training and from there we were told that we have been sacked and we should be doing individual POS business,” he said.

PlatinumPost had in an exclusive report in August revealed how the bank fired scores of his staff members across the federation with a promise of supporting them in setting up individual Point of Sale (POS) businesses.

Most affected were junior workers, who had spent up to 10 years in the bank.

Several attempts to get reaction from Fidelity Bank on the issue did not yield results as messages sent to the financial institution through its mail address and Facebook page were not responded to as at the time of filing this report.

Fidelity Bank, which boasts of over 3,000 staff, has about five million customers with 250 business offices and other various digital banking channels in Nigeria.
