Former Senator Shehu Sani has responded to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission’s (RMAFC) denial of his claim that Nigerian senators receive a monthly running cost of N13.5m in addition to their N750,000 salary.
Sani accused RMAFC of being evasive and misleading, stating that the commission only mentioned the salary figure without including the total monthly running cost. He wrote on his social media handle:
“RMAFC specifically quoted the figure of the salary earned by the lawmakers and then danced around the figures for the total sum of the monthly running cost per legislator. Anyway, I can understand their fears.”
This exchange follows RMAFC’s earlier statement contradicting Sani’s claim, insisting that senators receive only a monthly salary of N1m. The controversy surrounding senators’ earnings has sparked public debate, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently criticizing federal lawmakers for allegedly fixing their own salaries, describing the practice as “immoral”.
