Senate Urges Federal Government to Address Food Insecurity, Rising Cost of Living

The Nigerian Senate has called on the federal government to take immediate and decisive action to address the growing food insecurity and rising cost of living in the country. This call was made after a thorough debate on a motion sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) and co-sponsored by Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume.

Senator Karimi, while presenting the motion, noted that the prices of goods and household consumables have been on an abysmal rise in the country, leading to a high rate of inflation, weakened buying power, and general worsening of living conditions for the vast majority of Nigerians. He emphasized the need for urgent action to address the situation, which has left many citizens struggling to make ends meet.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, expressed concern over the situation and urged the federal government to find a solution to the growing food insecurity and rising cost of living. He noted that the Senate is committed to working with the executive to find a lasting solution to the problem.

The Senate also commended the federal government’s recent efforts to address the issue, including the suspension of taxes on imported food items and the provision of fertilizers to farmers across the country. However, some senators noted that these efforts have yet to reach their constituents, and more needs to be done to address the growing food insecurity and rising cost of living.

The Senate ultimately compressed all prayers into one, urging the federal government to swiftly address the food crisis in the country. The National Assembly is calling on the federal government to do everything within its power to urgently address the rising cost of living, especially food inflation, and ensure food security for all Nigerians.
