The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards strengthening the law against violence with the passage of a new bill aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against persons. The bill, which seeks to repeal and re-enact the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2024, passed its Second Reading on the floor of the Senate.
Sponsored by Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East), the bill aims to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims of violence, as well as punishment for offenders. Senator Jibrin noted that the existing law contains provisions that are inimical to the realization of its objectives, and inadequate provisions for compensation of victims of violence.
After deliberations, the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, to report back within six weeks. The committee is expected to conduct a thorough review of the bill and make necessary amendments to ensure that it is comprehensive and effective in addressing the scourge of violence against persons.
