Rivers Crisis: LP, APP Chiefs Bicker Over Fubara’s Alleged Plot to Dump PDP

The political landscape in Rivers State is becoming increasingly tumultuous as rumors swirl regarding Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action Peoples Party (APP). This speculation has ignited a fierce exchange between the APP and the Labour Party (LP), creating divisions among the state’s political factions.

Despite Fubara’s public denials of any intention to leave the PDP, expressing his commitment to the party during a recent meeting with the Senator Adolphus Wabara-led PDP Board of Trustees, opposition parties remain skeptical. They accuse the governor of maneuvering behind the scenes to facilitate a shift in allegiance, particularly in light of recent actions that suggest favoritism in candidate selection for the upcoming local government elections.

Allegations of Candidate Selection

The LP has been particularly vocal in its criticism, alleging that Fubara and his Chief of Staff, Hon. Edison Ehie, are handpicking candidates from within the confines of Government House in Port Harcourt for the October 5 local government elections. This, they argue, is a strategic move to lay the groundwork for Fubara’s eventual defection to the APP. The LP’s South-South Vice Chairman, Favour Reuben, has emerged as a prominent critic, accusing the governor of undermining the democratic process by selecting candidates without broader party input.

Reuben’s comments have not gone unnoticed, drawing sharp rebukes from APP officials. Hon. Sunny Wokekoro, the state Chairman of the APP, has publicly challenged Reuben, urging him to redirect his focus towards the upcoming council elections rather than engaging in what he describes as “mudslinging.” Wokekoro emphasized that the APP is steadfast in its mission and remains open to welcoming members from other political parties, suggesting that the party is poised to capitalize on any discontent within the PDP.

Political Tensions Escalate

The tensions between the LP and APP are indicative of a broader struggle for power in Rivers State as various political factions jockey for position ahead of the local elections. The accusations of candidate selection and the potential for defection have added fuel to an already charged political atmosphere. Both parties are keenly aware that the outcomes of the October 5 elections could significantly impact their influence in the state moving forward.

As the situation develops, the focus will likely remain on Fubara’s political maneuvers and the reactions from both the PDP and the opposition parties. The governor’s ability to navigate these turbulent waters will be crucial not only for his political future but also for the stability of the PDP in Rivers State.

With the local government elections just around the corner, the political stakes are high. The ongoing bickering between the LP and APP underscores the fragility of alliances and the volatility of party loyalties in Rivers State. As Fubara reassures party leaders of his commitment to the PDP, the shadow of potential defection looms large, leaving many to wonder about the future of political affiliations in the region. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether these rumors hold any weight or if they are merely a reflection of the competitive nature of Nigerian politics.
