Rescue Movement Commends Creation of State Police But Advises FG to Checkmate Governors Excesses

The Rescue Movement For New Nigeria aka Rescue The Vulnerable Initiative has commended the plan by the Federal Government of Nigeria to create State Police to tackle insecurity. Describing it as long overdue, the group advises the Federal Government to ensure policies that will checkmate state Governors to avoid the situation where State Police will be turned to witch-hunting tools against perceived opponents.

In a statement issued and made available to pressmen by the Rescue Movement National Director, Media and Publicity; Rev Emmanuel Olorunmagba; the group observed that “we have been witnessing the situations in this country where politicians use every power within their reach to persecute and witch-hunt those regarded as opponents especially state governors, hence if proper policies are not implemented to checkmate excesses, obviously some governors will turn the state police against some people in their state instead of against bandits that are terrorizing the people, thus making it counterproductive.

“The issue of insecurity in Nigeria requires every possible approach to tackle, but such approach should not be an opportunity to turn state power against innocent citizens”, he concludes
