Human rights lawyer Deji Ajare has called for the impeachment of Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo by the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Umar Yusuf, citing allegations of misconduct and abuse of office. Ajare sent a letter to the speaker through the House clerk, urging the initiation of impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Ajare highlighted the governor’s use of his motorcade to assist the embattled former governor, Yahaya Bello, in evading authorities, which he deemed as harboring a fugitive, obstructing justice, and misusing state resources. He emphasized the need for cooperation with the EFCC and law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The lawyer called on the Assembly to adhere to the Constitution and relevant laws, conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations, and hold Governor Ododo accountable if found guilty. He stressed the urgency of addressing the implications of the alleged misgovernance on the state’s residents.
In response, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mohammed Yabagi, stated that the House had not received Ajare’s letter and saw no grounds for impeachment proceedings against the governor. Yabagi clarified that there was no evidence of the governor obstructing security agencies in apprehending Yahaya Bello.
Efforts to contact the Special Adviser on Media to the Kogi State Governor, Ismaila Isah, were unsuccessful.
