PDP Presents Video Of INEC Officials Saying Results Would Be Sent To Server

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, on Monday presented 48 compact discs as exhibits.

They also presented video clips showing that election results from the polls would be transmitted to a central server.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal granted the application of the PDP and Atiku to tender the 48 video clips as exhibits.

Mike Igini, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom, was seen in one of the video clips aired at the election tribunal, saying that election results from the 2019 polls would be transmitted to a central server.

The video clip was obviously aired on Channels Television before the conduct of the 2019 elections. It was intended to prove an allegation by the PDP that INEC had used a central server for the collation of results.

In the video, Igini explained that the results would be collated at the various polling units into the form EC8A after which the collated results would then be transferred to the card reader and “transmitted to the central server.”

“The results declared at the polling units will then be sent directly to the INEC central server,” Igini said in the video clip.

The video clip was aired by the PDP after the party docked its star witness, Segun Showunmi.

Showunmi, who is the spokesperson for the PDP Presidential Campaign, was then cross-examined based on the information in the video.

Chief Chris Uche (SAN), counsel for the petitioners, had led Segun Showunmi to tender the materials before the five-man panel of justices.

During his cross-examination by Yunus Usman (SAN), counsel for INEC, Showunmi agreed that the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom was not a spokesman for the commission.

Usman also made the witness to confirm that the chairman of the electoral body only expressed the hope of the commission to transmit results of the general election electronically, but that it was actually done.

Usman was of the view that the video clips front-loaded by the witness had nothing to do with the February 23 general election.

The PDP had requested to inspect the INEC server after alleging that details of election results were manipulated by the commission to favour Buhari.

The election tribunal denied Atiku’s request to inspect INEC’s server last month, saying granting such an order would presuppose that the court had ruled that the server actually existed.

The court deferred pronouncement on the server until a proper argument has been made by both teams in the substantive petition, which entered its seventh day of hearing on Monday.

INEC had said it did not use a central server for the conduct of the election, saying doing so would have contradicted the Electoral Act.

But in a second video, the PDP showed the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, “expressing hope” that they will transmit results to a central server during the elections.

“We hope to establish a new platform for electronic collation and transmission of results,” Yakubu was heard saying in the second video.

When asked if the statement made by Yakubu regarding the electronic collation of results was “merely an expression of hope,” Showunmi responded in the affirmative.

The PDP and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, had earlier called INEC presiding officers as witnesses who testified that they did send results to a central server as directed.

Another clip was on the president’s certificate controversy as the army confirmed that Buhari had West African Examination Certificate with credits in English Language, History, Geography and a pass in English Literature.

Meanwhile, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), counsel for Buhari had tendered a video clip dated February 6 where chairman of the commission hinged the possible transmission of the election electronically to the signing of a new Electoral Act.

Drama, however, ensued as the petitioners’ legal team refused to allow their system to be used to play the CD.

In the circumstance, Izinyon filed an oral application for adjournment to allow his team bring their system and screen to continue with the cross examination of the witness.

Justice Mohammed Garba went ahead to adjourn the proceedings until July 16 for continuation.

Earlier, the petitioners presented three of their witnesses, totaling about 40 of them out of the 400 that were listed to testify so far.

On their parts, Babagana Kukawa, Hon. Abana Pogu, Suleman Mohammed, local government area collation agents for PDP had alleged over voting, vote buying, and violence disruption of the election in their various states.
