A devastating tragedy has occurred in Jaba, Fanisau Unogo Local Government Area of Kano State, where a 9-year-old girl, Rumaisa Sadiq, was allegedly raped and murdered by a ‘chemist’, Manir Mai.
Rumaisa’s father, Malam Sadiq Badamasi, had taken his three children to Manir Mai’s health facility seeking treatment for their fever. While two children were treated and sent home, Rumaisa was admitted due to her critical condition. Instead of receiving medical care, she was brutally raped and killed.
The chemist allegedly attributed Rumaisa’s deteriorated condition to the injections she received. However, upon discovering severe bleeding, her parents rushed her to the same chemist, who then advised taking her to a nearby hospital. The Primary Health-care Centre in Ungogo local government area turned her away, leaving the bleeding child without medical attention.
Rumaisa was finally admitted to Murtala Mohammed General Hospital, where doctors made a valiant effort to save her life. Despite their best efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The alleged perpetrator, Manir Mai, was arrested and charged with two counts of rape and homicide. The trial judge ordered his remand in a correctional center pending trial.
Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Disabled and Children, Hajia Aisha Saji, confirmed Rumaisa’s tragic death and assured that justice would be served. The Commissioner vowed that Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration would pursue the case to its conclusion, despite attempts to divert it, to serve as a deterrent to others.
