The Senate has called for urgent rehabilitation of communities in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, affected by recurring gunmen attacks and killings. Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East) raised the matter of urgent national importance, highlighting the devastating impact of the attacks on the communities.

The Senate noted that Omala LGA has been under recurring attacks, leading to killings, destruction of properties and farmlands, and displacement of over 30,000 inhabitants. The communities of Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi Odo, Bagaji, and Bagana have been particularly ravaged, with over 500 citizens killed and properties worth hundreds of millions of naira destroyed.

The Senate expressed concern about the lack of shelter, sustenance, and access to education and healthcare for the displaced persons. It also regretted the destruction of schools, health centers, markets, and business outfits, which has thrown the people into economic helplessness.

The Senate resolved to:

1. Observe a minute silence for the departed souls in Omala LGA.
2. Urge the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, and NEMA to provide relief materials and support for rehabilitation.
3. Provide seed capitals for women and youths to facilitate economic activities.

The Senate’s call for urgent rehabilitation aims to alleviate the suffering of the affected communities and restore normalcy to the area.
