Imo State Committee on Recovery of Missing Government Movable Property has disclosed that the immediate past governor of the state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and his aides as well as family members carted away state government’s properties worth over N50 billion, before leaving office on May 29.
Chairman of the committee, Chief Jasper Ndubuaku made the startling disclosure Wednesday while briefing newsmen in Owerri, on the activities of his committee, successes and challenges facing the members in carrying out the onerous task.
He asserted that his committee has so far recovered 279 Prado Jeeps belonging to the government, 27 pail loaders and 27 Lorries, transformers and power generating sets.
Ndubaku stated that 67 vehicles, in all, were carted away from Government House Owerri by the outgone Okorocha administration just as all past commissioners in the state went away with the vehicles in their custody.
He added that 150 electricity transformers procured by the former governor were equally carted away as well as plastic seats installed at the ICC, Owerri
Ndubuaku said, “Before this time, we went to ministry to ministry and house to house and discovered to our consternation that the immediate past administration of Rochas Okorocha looted all property in their possession including chairs, spoons and cutlery.”
According to him, the 10-man committee has resolved to apply the whistle- blowing strategy to encourage members of the public with useful information regarding the missing items to come and make such available to the committee.
The former member of the state House of Assembly appealed to those still in possession of government vehicles to return them to his committee immediately without further delay.
His words: “If after this appeal and they still remain adamant, we will be compelled to unleash the dragon, mobilise all concerned Imo indigenes to assist us to recover these missing items and if the worst comes, we will criminalise the matter.”
The former lawmaker, who hinted that his committee is already armed with the names, addresses and mobile phone numbers and other contacts of those involved in the despicable act to carry out its assignment accordingly.
Commenting on some of the vehicles allegedly sold at give away prices to cronies of Okorocha in the dying days of his administration, Hon. Ndubaku assured they would be reassessed while the vehicles genuinely sold and bought with proof of legitimate transaction would be left for their owners.
