The Nigerian government seems bent on deliberately keeping socialite Obinna Iyiegbu, alias Obi Cubana, in EFCC custody for a long time, on trumped up charges of money laundering or tax default. This is against the backdrop of the gubernatorial election in Anambra State which is scheduled for Saturday, 6th November. and not
Obi Cubana, an influential figure in Anambra state, as of today is yet to be identified with any of the political parties or principal actors on the field but there is a perception that he may not be on the same side with some actors who see his freedom as a threat to the planned election.
A reliable source disclosed this development, though observers wondered why Obi Cubana would be kept in the custody of EFCC for more than 48 hours and not charged to court according to the laws of the land having met bail conditions stipulated by the law.
Envisaging that Obi Cubana will throw his weight behind the opposition in Anambra in the forthcoming election in Anambra,he was taken from public glare, and will not be released until after the weekend election in Anambra, the source confirmed.
Accordingly, his illegal incarceration negates his fundamental human rights ,as well as rights of association in his immediate environment and by extension Nigeria.
“Nigeria has turned into a police state where perceived political opponents under the guise of state security are being harassed, clamped down and unnecessarily subjected to the instruments of the state under flimsy excuses.”
The source wondered why continuing keeping Obi Cubana in the custody of EFCC,saying it is capable of overheating the polity not only in Anambra, but the entire SouthEast of Nigeria.
“EFCC and other security agencies working on the template of clamping down on those opposed to its plans to rig Anambra election, should desist forthwith or risk being confronted and resisted “.
