Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu’s administration regarding the potential repercussions of neglecting the demands driving the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria.
During a visit to his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo addressed six members of the National Assembly, emphasizing the urgency for the Federal Government to respond to the legitimate concerns raised by the youth. He cautioned that failing to address these issues could lead to severe consequences for the nation.
The legislators present at the meeting are co-sponsoring a bill that proposes a single six-year presidential term with a rotational presidency between Nigeria’s North and South. Obasanjo urged the government to take the frustrations of the youth seriously, attributing their unrest to widespread poverty, unemployment, and a perceived lack of responsiveness from those in power.
He underscored that Nigeria’s progress hinges on a collective effort and a fundamental shift in mindset among leaders. Obasanjo argued that the focus should not solely be on the duration of presidential terms but rather on fostering trust in institutions and effective governance.
While discussing the proposed changes to presidential terms, he noted that whether Nigeria adopts a single six-year term or retains the current system, the effectiveness of governance ultimately depends on the integrity and accountability of its leaders.
