NUC Suspends Accreditation at Prince Abubakar University, Anyigba

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has suspended the accreditation of courses in three faculties at Prince Abubakar University in Anyigba. This decision was reportedly communicated to university officials just as preparations for the accreditation process were underway.

A source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the university had made extensive preparations, even borrowing staff from other institutions to facilitate the accreditation. However, the NUC unexpectedly announced the suspension, leaving the timing for resumption of the process uncertain.

The NUC cited several concerns as reasons for the suspension, including inadequate staff compensation, with professors reportedly earning salaries equivalent to those of senior lecturers, and corps members being tasked with teaching postgraduate courses. Additionally, the decision is linked to the recent cessation of Earned Academic Allowances and the requirement for the university to remit 50% of its internally generated revenue to the state government.

Efforts to reach the Vice Chancellor for comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
