The Northern Governors Forum has officially rejected the Tax Reform Bill proposed by President Bola Tinubu, asserting that it is detrimental to the interests of the North and other sub-national entities.
During a meeting held on Monday, the governors expressed their concerns through a communique delivered by the forum’s Chairman, Governor Mohammed Yahaya of Gombe State. They specifically criticized the proposed amendment to the distribution of Value Added Tax (VAT), which seeks to adopt a derivation-based model.
The communique stated, “The Forum notes with dismay the content of the recent Tax Reform Bill forwarded to the National Assembly. The provisions of the bill are against the interests of the North and other sub-nationals, particularly the proposed amendment regarding the distribution of Value Added Tax.”
The governors called on members of the National Assembly to oppose any legislation that could jeopardize the welfare of their constituents. They highlighted that companies remit VAT based on the location of their headquarters and tax offices, rather than where goods and services are consumed.
In light of these concerns, the Forum unanimously rejected the proposed Tax Amendments and urged National Assembly members to stand against any bill that threatens the well-being of their people.
Additionally, the governors emphasized the need for equity and fairness in the implementation of all Federal Government programs and policies. They called for “equity and fairness in the execution of national policies and programs to ensure that no geopolitical zone is marginalized or disadvantaged.”
