The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has doubled down on its rejection of the Tax Reform Bill, labeling it a policy designed in bad faith and cautioning against the potential for a national crisis.
Critics within the group have condemned the implementation process of the bill, alleging that key stakeholders, including members of the National Economic Council, were left out of discussions.
Speaking after the Forum’s recent meeting in Abuja, NEF Convener Professor Ango Abdullahi highlighted concerns about policies that could further marginalize the North’s resource potential.
NEF praised the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Nigeria Council of Traditional Rulers for opposing the bill, commending them for their patriotic stance. The group also called on Northern politicians in the National Assembly to speak out against the bill.
The Forum expressed strong opposition to the bill’s current form, describing it as a threat to national unity and cohesion. It criticized the manner in which the bill was introduced, suggesting that it was pushed forward without proper consultation with critical stakeholders.
NEF also raised concerns about the state of education in the country, particularly in the North, pointing to high tuition costs preventing students from returning to higher education institutions. Additionally, the group discussed the issue of out-of-school children and expressed doubt about the effectiveness of federal student loan schemes.
Addressing the mining sector, NEF condemned what it referred to as dubious mining policies being pushed by the Ministry of Mines and Solid Minerals in collaboration with certain political actors. The group warned against stifling the investment opportunities linked to the North’s vast mineral resources.
Urging Northerners to remain vigilant in defending their rights, particularly during elections, NEF cautioned against manipulation by leaders with questionable records. The group emphasized the importance of unity within the region and urged against division.
