The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has revealed that Nigerians will be required to pay for the new multipurpose national identity card, attributing this decision to the government’s limited revenue.
During a recent two-day roundtable discussion with journalists in Lagos, Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, explained, “The payment ensures that the card is produced only for those who genuinely need it.” This strategy aims to prevent a repeat of past experiences where free physical cards were issued but remained uncollected.
Dr. Iwegbu noted, “In previous efforts to distribute free National ID cards, over two million were produced, yet many have not been collected to this day.” He emphasized that the government’s financial constraints significantly influenced the decision to implement a fee for the new ID card.
Mr. Lanre Yusuf, Director of Information Technology at NIMC, echoed these sentiments, stating, “The initiative for a free national ID card did not yield the desired results in the past.” He described the new ID card as a post-paid identity card, highlighting that individuals must demonstrate a need for the card before applying.
“To obtain the new national ID card, Nigerians will need to make a payment, choose a pickup location, and collect their card from that site,” Yusuf explained.
He also shared that the government has introduced programs to ensure accessibility for underprivileged Nigerians who may struggle to afford the card but require it to access government support. “This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equality,” he added.
Yusuf announced that the multipurpose ID cards are set to launch soon, with sample test cards already received. He further noted, “NIMC is collaborating with banks nationwide, allowing individuals to visit any nearby bank to request their cards.”
Highlighting the card’s versatility, Yusuf stated, “The new national ID card will serve multiple purposes, including identity verification, payment processing, and access to government services.”
Developed in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System, the card is designed to facilitate government intervention programs and services across various ministries, departments, and agencies.
