The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday adjourned the quizzing of service chiefs over rising insecurity in the country to February 13, 2024.
The meeting with the service chiefs commenced on Wednesday, 7th of February. However, the federal lawmakers adjourned the sitting to next week Wednesday to accommodate everyone involved in the management of security in the country.
The security chiefs who were present in the Senate chamber were scheduled to address lawmakers on escalating insecurity in the country but the decision to broaden the briefing caused the Senate to reschedule it for a later date.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate’s leader, moved the motion to adjourn the security briefing by the service chiefs, which was backed by Senator Abba Moro, the minority leader.
While approving the adjournment, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the Senate would like to conduct a comprehensive discussion on insecurity.
The Senate clerk was later asked to widen the invitees list to cover all Service Chiefs. The National Security Adviser, Finance Minister, Interior Minister, Defence Minister, Secretary of State for Defence, and Minister of Police Affairs.
The Senate summoned the service chiefs in a unanimous decision on January 30, the first legislative day of the year, in response to the country’s ongoing instability.
The service chiefs present for today’s briefing were General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS).
