The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on administrative bail after detaining him for several hours. Ajaero’s arrest and detention sparked widespread concern and speculation, with the NLC accusing the DSS of acting without a warrant.
The labour union strongly condemned the arrest, stating that Ajaero’s detention was “a brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation.” The NLC demanded his immediate and unconditional release, calling on the international community and human rights organizations to take note of the rising wave of authoritarianism in Nigeria.
Ajaero’s release was facilitated by Barrister Marshal Abubakar from the Femi Falana Chambers. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore confirmed the release, tweeting that the “fascist regime” of President Bola Tinubu had released Ajaero on bail.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern about the state of democracy and human rights in Nigeria, with many criticizing the government’s actions as a clampdown on dissenting voices.
