Nigeria@59: Nothing to celebrate-Sheikh Gumi

by

A Northern based Islamic leader Dr. Mahmud Abubakar Gumi has said that there is nothing to celebrate at 59 years of Nigerian’s independence.
Sheikh Gumi who spoke in an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Pilot in Kaduna, said that even though there are progresses made, Nigeria’s 59th independence is not worth celebrating in view of the overwhelming security challenges and poor economic situation in the country
“We should thank God for giving us the opportunity to be thriving at 59 years. I feel so optimistic about the future of Nigeria. We know there are many problems stagnating the country to tackle but there will be joy at the end of the tunnel. I know we have myriads of problems stagnating us without ways of finding solutions to it”, he stated.
The sheikh said “The country is blessed with a lot of mineral resources. There is future in this country. Many nations would have dreamt to have one- third of what we have, what’s lacking now is general education and knowledge to leave together in Peace”, he said.
He also noted that “There are a lot of progresses because before now 18 military officers could just take over government by coup and start dictating to us, impose their ideas on us, but it is almost impossible now.
“Where we’re having problems is that, the masses who decide the fate of the country are not educated. We may have problems now but it will pass away”, Gumi stated.
On whether Nigeria is progressing, Gumi said ”Look at human indices and physical progress, the country is developing. Now we have universities everywhere in the North unlike in the past where we had only ABU. We also have many doctors now in Northern Nigeria, unlike before.
He also stated that there were too much negative forces fighting for power. ‘When we were in medical school you could see few of us from North, but now we’ve many and even importing now. What we lack is synergy of efforts”, he added.
On independence celebration, he said “I don’t think there’s anything to celebrate because of insecurity, killings, kidnapping, bad economy, so bad with Boko Haram. No need for celebration. We have not graduated. We’ll graduate. It took Americans 200 years to become what they are now.
According to him, the solution lied on how we spend money on education and possibly bring foreigners to teach us. We’ll celebrate when we graduate. But we’re making progress. Need Leaders that are competent to solve all sundry problems we have”,
On ways forward, he said the country should make education cheap, build health centers, good roads, and housing and build Knowledge, whether ruling class or whoever.
