The Managing Director and CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Abdulaziz, recently shared that Nigeria supplies neighboring countries Togo and Benin with round-the-clock electricity, despite ongoing discussions about power issues in Nigeria.
During an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Tonight program, Abdulaziz stated that Togo, Benin, and Niger receive continuous power from Nigeria and are paying for it. He also mentioned that certain areas in Nigeria receive 20-24 hours of power supply daily.
Abdulaziz expressed optimism about achieving consistent electricity supply across Nigeria within the next five years, highlighting that system collapses do not always originate from TCN. He clarified that the TCN solely handles transmission, unlike the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) which was responsible for generation, transmission, distribution, and marketing.
The TCN boss acknowledged infrastructure challenges, citing outdated equipment as a major issue. He also defended the affordability of electricity in Nigeria compared to other African countries like Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Niger.
Abdulaziz emphasized the need for understanding the complexities of the power sector and urged Nigerians to differentiate between TCN and its predecessor, NEPA, to address and resolve power issues effectively.
