The Defense Headquarters in Abuja is actively monitoring the recruitment activities of a newly established Jihadist group called ‘Lakurawa,’ which is utilizing social media and welfare incentives to attract members.
Reports have indicated that the group has been imposing taxes and levies on communities in Sokoto State, located in Northwest Nigeria. ‘Lakurawa’ Islamic preachers armed heavily have been identified operating in five local government areas within the state, including Tangaza, Gudu, Ilela, Silame, and Binji.
Confirming the presence of the group in the North-western region, Director of Defense Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, addressed the media in Abuja last Thursday. In an interview with PUNCH on Tuesday, Buba emphasized that the military is collaborating with other security agencies and the state government to disrupt the recruitment efforts of the Jihadist group.
Buba highlighted that ‘Lakurawa’ is luring potential recruits with sermons and welfare benefits, as well as employing social media platforms to expand its recruitment drive.
He stated, “The group is using social media platforms to propagate their messages, sharing sermons, and enticing recruits with promises of welfare packages. Nevertheless, we are aware of their tactics and are working in conjunction with other security forces and the state government to counter their recruitment efforts.”
