Middle Belt Forum Protests Exclusion from Northwest Development Commission

In a shocking move, the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Kaduna State Chapter, has condemned the exclusion of its members from the newly formed Governing Board of the North West Development Commission (NWDC). This oversight is disturbing, considering the significant land size and population of the Middle Belt regions in the Northwest.

According to Mr. Luka Binniyat, Chairman of the Middle Belt Forum, Kaduna State Chapter, in a press release signed on October 6, 2024, the total absence of Middle Belt representation on the board is unacceptable and neglects the diversity and composition of the Northwest. The Middle Belt spans 13 states and the FCT, with Southern Kaduna and Southern Kebbi being predominantly Christian areas. These regions have been historically marginalized, and their exclusion from the commission perpetuates this trend.

Mr. Binniyat noted that the exclusion will continue the historical marginalization of the Middle Belt, neglecting their welfare and interests. He emphasized that the absence of Middle Belt members means that their community’s interests will not be prioritized. Furthermore, Southern Kaduna and Southern Kebbi have suffered genocidal attacks and kidnappings since 2014, requiring fair resource allocation.

The MBF Chairman expressed concern that Senate confirmation and presidential inauguration without representation may lead to crises. He urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to reconsider, noting that the Middle Belt’s restraint during the #EndBadGovernance protests was a gesture of peace. Inclusion in the commission would boost the President’s standing and demonstrate appreciation for the region’s loyalty.

Mr. Binniyat highlighted the Middle Belt’s significance, stating that it is crucial to Nigeria’s political and economic strength, with a landmass of 300,000 square km and significant mineral and natural resources. It is the country’s food basket, producing most of the food exported outside Nigeria.

By excluding the Middle Belt from the NWDC, the government risks perpetuating historical marginalization and neglecting the region’s welfare. The MBF’s call for inclusion is a step towards recognizing the Middle Belt’s significance and promoting peace and cooperation in the Northwest.

The Middle Belt Forum’s protest is a wake-up call for the government to address the region’s long-standing grievances and ensure equitable representation in national institutions.
