Manchester United team news suggests Paul Pogba could be benched for Tottenham fixture despite hopes for midfield partnership with Bruno Fernandes

Paul Pogba will reportedly start on the bench for Manchester United in their game against Tottenham on Friday.

The midfielder has played just eight times this season due to an ankle injury, with his last appearance coming on Boxing Day

During his absence, Bruno Fernandes, a £47million January signing from Sporting Lisbon, has been a revelation at Old Trafford, scoring three goals and registering four assists in his first nine games for the club.

With Pogba’s return to training last month, United fans have been waiting in anticipation for both players to line up together in midfield.

But the wait will go on, according to The Athletic, who claim Pogba will have to settle for a place on the bench for the trip to Tottenham this week.

The report adds the 27-year-old ‘needs to earn his way back into a team that went 11 matches unbeaten prior to the coronavirus outbreak’.

Earlier this month, United legend Paul Scholes admitted it would be difficult for Pogba to make an immediate return to the starting XI.

He said: “Paul has got a little bit of work to do to get into the team.

Before the outbreak happened and the stop happened, you have to say that the players that were playing – Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay and Fred – they were really doing well in midfield.

“It’s not going to be straightforward for Paul. He’s got some work on his hands just to get back into the team.

“But we all know what Paul’s capable of. He’s a top player when he’s on form.

“The better players you play with, surely that can only be to the benefit of the team.”
