The Labour Party, LP, finds itself embroiled in a deepening crisis, with members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, staging protests at the party’s national secretariat and state offices.
Former presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, along with his supporters known as Obidients, have reportedly distanced themselves from the LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure. This move follows internal strife within the party since the conclusion of the 2023 general elections.
Allegations of financial misconduct have plagued Abure’s tenure, with calls for investigations into embezzlement claims by party treasurer Oluchi Oparah. These accusations, totaling N3.5 billion, have heightened tensions within the party.
Additionally, concerns over Abure’s leadership style, described as akin to that of a “sole administrator” by party stakeholders, including the NLC, have further exacerbated the situation. The recent picketing of the LP headquarters in Abuja reflects widespread discontent with Abure’s governance.
Amidst controversy surrounding plans for a national convention, stakeholders have voiced opposition to Abure’s alleged unilateral decision-making. Criticism has centered on the lack of inclusivity and transparency in the convention planning process.
As the LP grapples with internal discord, speculation mounts regarding potential successors to Abure. Comrade Isaac Balami, a former Deputy National Campaign Manager to Peter Obi/Dati Presidential Campaign, has emerged as a frontrunner for the chairmanship, with discussions among party leadership and chieftains underway.
In response to inquiries, Balami acknowledged pressure to vie for the chairmanship, citing ongoing deliberations and challenges hindering his official declaration. Notably, his potential candidacy underscores the pivotal role of youth constituents in shaping the LP’s trajectory.
Meanwhile, Dr. Yunusa Salisu Tanko, Chief Spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 election, emphasized the imperative of inclusive and transparent party conventions. Tanko underscored the need for a convention that reflects the interests of all stakeholders, echoing sentiments expressed by NLC and party members.
Addressing speculations surrounding Peter Obi’s purported departure from the LP ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, Tanko dismissed the claims, affirming the former candidate’s continued commitment to the party.
