The Labour Party’s Board of Trustees has stepped in to take control of the party following the end of Mr. Julius Abure’s tenure as head of the National Working Committee. This move aims to prevent any leadership gaps within the party, according to a press release issued on March 27, 2024.
The decision aligns with the Labour Party Constitution and comes after consultations with key stakeholders. The Board of Trustees, in compliance with a Federal High Court consent judgment from March 20, 2018, is preparing for an all-inclusive National Convention. This judgment, delivered by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, recognized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as the rightful owners of the Labour Party and mandated the organization of a comprehensive National Convention.
The Board’s action also follows an agreement signed in 2022 between the former National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), mediated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement, Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, commended the dedication of Labour Party members, including workers, students, youths, market traders, and candidates, to the party’s principles. He assured stakeholders that the Board is committed to initiating the process for an all-inclusive National Convention promptly.
Unlike recent events in Nnewi, the Board promises a transparent process starting with grassroots congresses at various levels. This approach aims to involve all genuine Labour Party members and will be conducted openly with the presence of relevant authorities and media.
The statement also acknowledged the refusal of Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party leader, and other key stakeholders to endorse the party event in Nnewi, indicating a commitment to addressing malfeasance within the party.
In closing, Comrade Ejiofor emphasized the Board’s dedication to restoring and repositioning the Labour Party as a vehicle for the socio-political advancement of Nigeria and its people.
