The APC Professionals Forum has hailed the Supreme Court’s affirmation of local government autonomy as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, crediting President Bola Tinubu for making it a reality. In a statement, the group’s Chairman, Dr. Isa Yuguda, praised the President for his role in ensuring the implementation of constitutional provisions, which will now enable the 774 local government councils to have direct access to funds allocated to them.
The Forum noted that despite increased allocations to states and local governments since President Tinubu assumed office, there has been no commensurate improvement in development at the state and grassroots levels. They expressed hope that local government authorities will now live up to the expectations of the people in their domain, with control over funds for grassroots development.
The group highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to decentralizing power and restructuring, as evident in his Renewed Hope manifesto. They praised his administration for taking the bold step of suing state governors over the alleged misuse of local government funds, leading to the Supreme Court’s affirmation of local government autonomy.
The APC Professionals Forum concluded that history will be kind to President Tinubu for his role in achieving this significant milestone, which will pave the way for proper grassroots development and efficiency in the third tier of government.
