In a significant breakthrough for Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has obtained approval from President Bola Tinubu to upgrade Ibadan Airport to international status, paving the way for enhanced economic growth and regional integration.
The governor made the announcement during a courtesy visit from the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan on Wednesday. He revealed that he would be heading to Abuja to finalize the necessary documentation, assuring that work on the project would commence as soon as all documentation is complete.
The upgrade project includes expanding the runway and building a new terminal, which is expected to significantly boost the state’s economy. Governor Makinde sought the input of Air Force personnel in ensuring the project meets required operating standards, demonstrating his commitment to collaboration and excellence.
This development follows Governor Makinde’s promise during his recent state of the state address to airlift pilgrims from Ibadan Airport for the 2024 Hajj. The Chief of Air Staff commended Governor Makinde for his administration’s support to the armed forces, particularly the Air Force Base in the state, highlighting the governor’s dedication to strengthening national security and regional cooperation.
