The peace Kogi State House of Assembly has enjoyed for over two years is under threat thanks to the unbridled ambition of a few lawmakers in the Assembly who have offered themselves to be willing destabilising tools of certain powerful individuals.
The Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Mohammed and Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Idris Ndako are the alleged arrowheads of the planned onslaught.
In furtherance of the impeachment scheme, the Deputy Speaker convened a meeting the next day after the 2020 budget presentation where strategy was put in place for the execution of the plot. A follow up meeting resolved the sharing of spoils of the war of attrition. How far the conspirators will go in their campaign is a puzzle time will reveal.
The first step in executing the obnoxious agenda of this group of desperate lawmakers is a planned protest slated for when the Governor returns to the state with a rented crowd requesting for the Speaker’s impeachment.
Predictably, I watched in amusement as a motley crowd of miscreants converged obviously under the influence of banned substances asking to be gifted the Speakership of Kogi State House of Assembly and the pertinent question to ask is; were these agitators on holidays on the moon during the period their kindred were Speakers for seven times or they are just blinded by ethnic bigotry to see the stupidity in their actions and utterances?
The instigators of the impeachment quest we were reliably informed are leveraging on the grouse of the Deputies. While the Deputy Speaker is said to be aggrieved because of the Speaker’s perceived support for New Honourable members in the cold war between him and new members, Hon. Ndako Idris we are told has never hidden his frustration at the closeness of the Speaker with the Governor which he alleged is responsible for the disdain the Governor has treated the Assembly.
Hon. Idris Ndako has told all who cared to listen that instead of the Speaker to confront the Executive on issues affecting the welfare of Honorable Members, the Speaker is more occupied and concerned with protecting the Governor to the detriment of the interests of his colleagues.
Though working behind the scenes, the puppeteers embarked on this project because of what might play out in 2023. It is strange that mere mortals who cannot predict what the next minute holds will tow such mischievous path in anticipation of what will play out after a tenure yet to commence.
Apart from satiating an overblown ego, of what benefit is another crisis in Kogi State House of Assembly at this time?
The outcome of the last Governorship election in Kogi State shattered an age-long myth that has changed the narrative in political permutations in the State.
If not for the magnanimity of His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, certain individuals ougth to have honourably exited the New Direction Government or shown the way out. Before the election, boastful and vain declarations were made that God rendered useless and the same persons who despite the humongous resources placed at their disposal could not win their polling units and wards have become mischievous tools of acrimony in the hands of political merchants.
Those with discerning abilities understand the reasons for the insane desperation to instigate another round of crisis in a House of Assembly that has enjoyed peace and stability for over two years; which is a departure from the rancorous situation it was persistently saddled with then.
Do I have any sympathy for the Speaker? Not at all. He is too cosy with the Governor for my liking and the time has come to see if his loyalty to the Governor will be enough to see him through the unfolding conspiracy.
