At least 20 aspirants seeking elective offices in the forthcoming local government elections in Kano State have tested positive for multiple drugs, according to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The agency’s commander in the state, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, confirmed that the aspirants, presented by the ruling party (NNPP), tested positive for drugs including opioid (codeine), THC (Tetrahydro cannabis), benzodiazenpines, and nicotine.
The drug screening exercise is ongoing, and Ahmad noted that no female aspirant has tested positive so far. The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has fixed October 26 to conduct local government elections into 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions by the 18 registered political parties.
